Hollywood actor and former professional wrestler Dwayne Johnson has said he has no regrets about failing to secure a place in the National Football League (NFL), describing the experience as an important turning point in his career.
Johnson shared his reflections in a video posted on Instagram, discussing his early ambitions to become a professional football player and how missing out on the NFL influenced his subsequent career.
Johnson Reflects on His Football Career
Before entering professional wrestling, Johnson played college football for the University of Miami Hurricanes. He was part of the university's team that won the national championship in 1991.
Johnson had hoped to pursue a professional football career after college. However, competition for positions limited his opportunities. He later signed with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League (CFL) in 1995 but was released after a short period.
Reflecting on his experience, Johnson said he had been close to securing a place on an NFL roster but did not make the final selection.
He described himself as the 54th player competing for a place on a 53-player roster.
Warren Sapp's Arrival Changed His Position
Johnson recalled how the arrival of Warren Sapp, who later became a prominent NFL defensive player, affected his position on the University of Miami team.
According to Johnson, Sapp's performances resulted in him moving to the bench.
Johnson acknowledged that he had not been good enough to secure a place in the NFL at the time. He said he did not blame external factors for the outcome.
Wrestling Career Followed NFL Setback
After his football career ended, Johnson turned to professional wrestling. He made his WWE debut in 1996 under the ring name Rocky Maivia.
He subsequently became known as The Rock and established himself as one of professional wrestling's most recognised performers before moving into Hollywood.
Johnson said his eventual success in wrestling allowed him to achieve financial goals that he had originally hoped to accomplish through football, including buying homes for his parents and himself.
Johnson Says Football Taught Him Work Ethic
Johnson said his experience in college football helped develop the discipline and determination that later influenced his professional career.
He also discussed changes in college athletics, particularly the introduction of Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) opportunities that allow eligible college athletes in the United States to earn money through commercial activities.
He expressed support for athletes receiving financial benefits from their sporting careers, noting that college players during his time did not have comparable opportunities.
Johnson said he still missed certain aspects of football but had no regrets about not reaching the NFL.
His comments offered a reflection on the career path that followed his departure from professional football and his subsequent success in wrestling and entertainment.
